Pukapuka

PUKAPUKA - was referred to as Danger Island in the 18th century by foreign sailors, because of hazardous rocks that lie hidden just outside the reef, traditionally named Te Ulu-o-te-Watu ("head of the rock"), it also has the reputation for romance & adventure.

Pukapuka has three small islets called motus, a total land area of 1.9 square miles, and still supports around 660 inhabitants in three villages, with a good supply of fresh water.

Closer to Samoa than its capital, Rarotonga (820 miles), this atoll reflects the personality of its neighbors to the west. Originally settled in 1300 by Samoan forbears, which influenced customs and language, the current inhabitants are dependent on seasonal shellfish and fruit for their food supply. The small population lives and works as a true commune, often the case with tiny Pacific island communities.

Air Rarotonga offer a twice monthly tours of Manahiki, Pukapuka and Penryn lasting one week and include accommodation.
